It wasn’t until the refinement of distillation that high proof alcohols were used in perfumery. With alcohol based perfumes you are left with higher notes, that carry further around oneself, clinging to hair, clothing, atmosphere, moving the individual out of the personal and into the communal. To walk into a room and alter its mood is the sneaky and manipulative aspects of perfumery, and alcohol based perfumes are very clever and effective at doing this. Since each aroma of a plant carries its specific mood, and when blended together a new feeling state is induced within and without, these blends are for the solar days when one is out and about with others.

Every counterculture has taken advantage of patchouli in some way, as if ushering out the deep wisdom of the Earth through its earthy, sweet, and spicy notes. One of the only essences that gets better with age, we are reminded that when consciously tended to Nature always creates a more beautiful version of itself at each moment. Ushered forth during the first protests in England in the 1800’s against the industrial revolution, and most recently used in the hippy movement of the ’60’s, patchouli truly stands the ground of Mother Earth. Paired with vetiver and vanilla, the dry out is earthy yet sweet. And just as the sun releases essences of flowers, this blend liberates some precious florals from the caverns of the soil: champaka, orange blossom, rose and neroli all captivate the nose on first encounter, as if you were smelling a flower and being drawn into its roots simultaneously.
